“Answering the Calls” – National Aboriginal Day 2017

June 21, 2017

Indigenous cultures, traditions, and contributions were celebrated this National Aboriginal Day at Victoria Park in Saskatoon. In addition to speakers, musicians, artists, and displays, the second annual “Rock Your Roots, Walk for Reconciliation” was also held. Families, students, and organizations participated in the trek along the River Landing area.

With the theme “Answering the Calls” put forward by Reconciliation Saskatoon, there was a focus on partnerships between Indigenous and other community organizations.  This emphasis reflects the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s finding that relationship building is a necessary step in the reconciliation process.

In speaking to the audience, Chief Commissioner Arnot observed that, “I can think of no better word than resilience to describe the inner strength, perseverance, and capacity of Indigenous people. This resilience must be respected, and honoured, like we are doing today. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission has asked us all to work together to build an inclusive society. At the heart of inclusion is the need to demonstrate respect for the rights of others.”
