In 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission asked us all – Indigenous and non-Indigenous people alike – to work together to build a healthy society. In order to do that, we must understand each other. Understanding is the first step towards reconciliation. It is imperative that all Canadians understand the past in order to create a better future.
Through its citizenship education initiative, the Commission is working to foster this understanding because student are owed an honest assessment of what went right, what went wrong, and how the wrongs can be repaired within a modern context.
