SHRC Recognizes Support of Mennonite Central Committee Saskatchewan
January 16, 2017On January 14, Chief Commissioner David Arnot thanked Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) Saskatchewan Board Chair Dan Siebert, and past Board Chair Peter Guenther, for the MCC’s support of the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission’s work.
In 2011, the Commission met with over 100 stakeholders to discuss potential changes to The Saskatchewan Human Rights Code. The final amendments included the addition of systemic advocacy to resolve discrimination that affects groups of people, mediation and directed mediation to support appropriate case resolution, and refocusing public education on citizenship. MCC Saskatchewan wrote a letter in support of those changes.
The Commission met with the MCC several times over the past six years to discuss progress. The MCC has been kept up to date on the development and ongoing roll out of citizenship education resources for Kindergarten to Grade 12 classrooms in Saskatchewan.
Representatives from the MCC attended the first ever Courageous Conversations event in November 2016. That event focused on the need to discuss the importance of dialogue and relationships in our increasingly multicultural province.
