Treaty 6 Territory, Métis Nation of Saskatchewan Flag Raising Ceremony Promotes Harmony

October 30, 2013

On October 25, 2013 two flags, one representing First Nations people in Treaty 6 Territory, and one representing the Métis Nation of Saskatchewan, were raised in front of the Saskatoon City Hall.  Through song, ceremony, dance, and presentations, the historical and contemporary contributions of First Nations and Métis people were acknowledged.

This first ever flag-raising was an outcome of relationship building efforts between local, provincial and federal organizations.  Organizers also recognized the contributions of past and current Treaty Commissioners, including the work of David Arnot, the Chief Commissioner of the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission, and a former Treaty Commissioner for Saskatchewan from 1997 to 2007.é
